Online Couples Therapy

If your relationship looks good from the outside, but struggles behind closed doors, we may be a good fit.

Maybe you're arguing. Perhaps one of you feels criticized while the other feels unheard. You still care about each other. But you're frustrated, disconnected or wondering how things got this way.

I've been with my wife for 23 years. I'm perfectly imperfect. But I try to learn, grow and improve. I bring that mindset to my work with couples.

I specialize in assertive communication—helping couples talk through difficult issues while feeling heard and respected. To achieve this communication sweet-spot, I show couples a tool called “The 5 Secrets to Effective Communication.” This tool helps couples de-escalate heated conversations and connect with respect. This tool is immediately impactful, both inside and outside of therapy. It may even foster reconciliation for couples considering divorce. (An easy way to remember it is with this pneumonic device: Dragons Eat Iguanas For Supper.)

Truth is, couples therapy should not be about deciding who's right or wrong. It's about understanding each other, taking responsibility and learning better ways to communicate.

I also try to make men feel heard and respected in couples therapy. This one is personal.

My wife and I attended couples therapy for several years. And honestly, there were times I dreaded going. I remember one therapist raising her hand and telling me to shush when I tried to speak. I often left sessions feeling criticized, judged and unheard.

Was I perfect? Absolutely not. There were many times I could have communicated with more humility, patience and respect. That's on me. I had things to learn. And I still do. But those experiences taught me this: Couples therapy should never feel like two against one.

As a therapist who specializes in working with men, I regularly hear from guys who dread going to couples therapy because they're afraid of being blamed, criticized or ganged up on. I understand that concern because I've experienced it.

That doesn't mean men get a free pass in my office. Far from it. Both partners need to take responsibility for their behavior. Both deserve to be challenged when necessary. And both deserve to feel heard and respected.

My job isn't to pick sides. It's to help you get on the same side.

I also use the Gottman Method to help couples strengthen their connection, improve communication and manage conflict more effectively. The goal isn't a perfect relationship. It's a healthier one.
